Legal Framework

MSME registration is governed by the MSMED Act 2006 and the Udyam Registration system launched in July 2020 under Ministry of MSME notification.

MSMED Act 2006, Section 7: Classification of enterprises into Micro, Small, and Medium based on investment in plant & machinery (manufacturing) or equipment (services) and annual turnover.

Udyam Registration (July 1, 2020): Replaced Udyog Aadhaar. Self-declaration based, Aadhaar-linked, PAN & GST auto-verified. Certificate issued instantly from udyamregistration.gov.in.

Current limits (post-2020 revision):
— Micro: Investment ≤ ₹1 crore + Turnover ≤ ₹5 crore
— Small: Investment ≤ ₹10 crore + Turnover ≤ ₹50 crore
— Medium: Investment ≤ ₹50 crore + Turnover ≤ ₹250 crore
